Wintry pattern most of the week as we welcome in Spring 2025 Thursday
Mountain snow and a mix of rain and snow at lower elevations will define the last week of winter 2024-25. There will be snow off and on over the Cascades leading to over a foot or more of new snow by the end of the week. The lower elevations are likely to see snow overnight and rain during the day. Accumulations will be low, but there will be plenty of snow falling. The ground is not frozen, so the time it takes for the snow to melt and cool the ground enough for the snow to build takes some time.
Wednesday will start out quiet as the skies fill with clouds as the day moves along. Snow begins on the mountain early in the afternoon, and a wintry mix is likely over the High Desert before sunset. Snow is possible overnight into Thursday with Thursday morning travel conditions deteriorating.
Thursday will see off and on snow and rain with highs in the upper 40s as we begin the Spring season. The Vernal Equinox is going to occur at 2:01 AM local time on the 20th of March. That is when the direct rays of the sun are over the equator and is the start of Spring 2025. The calendar may say spring, but the weather says winter.
Friday will see more rain and snow in the area as well as some gusty winds at times. The mercury in the thermometer will get back to the 50s for the first time in several days. The rain and snow continue off and on through the day and into Saturday.
Saturday should be the last day of the persistent pattern of precipitation. Snow on the mountains and a mix over the high desert will define the day. It should be spotty and variable, but not much in the way of sunshine due to the off and on nature of the event.
On Sunday the highs will be in the 60s and we may see some 70-degree weather by Monday or Tuesday. That is more spring-like.
