Local Alert Day for isolated storms, still hot today

The Storm Prediction Center has placed a good portion of the Tri-Counties in the “general risk” for thunderstorms today.  There is a Marginal Risk for severe storms to our south and east, but we are only expecting storms with some gusty wind, lightning, and small hail. The severe moniker is added to storms with near 60 mph winds and hail over 1” in diameter (size of a quarter). The storms today are more likely in SE Deschutes and Eastern Crook, but we all need to keep an eye to the sky if we are outside today. The Marginal Risk area was increased slightly into Crook and Deschutes Counties due to a bit more unstable weather in the region due to the hotter than expected day.

The other issue today is the temperature profile. We hit our 4th 90° day in a row today. Bend has broken or tied a record for the past three days and today will be the 4th in that run if we get higher than 92° this afternoon and we did, by hitting 95.  Warm Springs will approach 100 once again today.

Wednesday morning will still have a chance for some rain and isolated storms before or near sunrise. The storms are once again expected in the east, and should clear out by 8 or 9 am. The winds then scour out the remaining moisture and the region begins a long stretch of dry and warm days.

Thursday and through the weekend will see the mercury reach the middle 70s to low 80s under mostly sunny skies.  The dry air is always a concern with respect to wildfires, so make sure to obey all burn bans as well as extinguish all fires vigorously and safely. There is an elevated risk of fires on Wednesday due o the flow of air from the west. Dry and warm follows a hot pattern, not a good recipe.
