LOCAL ALERT WEATHER DAY: High heat, poor air quality, and enhanced fire danger today
Bend, OR (KTVZ) -
We’ve issued a Local Alert Weather Day for high heat, unhealthy air quality, and enhanced fire danger.
Today should be the last day of the heat wave for the majority of Central Oregon. Temperatures will top out in the upper 80s and low 90s. A Heat Advisory will be active through Wednesday night for portions of Central Oregon. Little overnight relief is expected to continue for the next few nights. There is potential for the advisory to expire early as temperatures cool from smoke, cloud cover, and rain. Temperatures should be near normal by mid week.
Smoke from the Flat Fire will continue to reduce air quality. Winds will generally come from the north-northeast, but are a bit variable this afternoon. That means there won't be much opportunity for good ventilation and clearing skies. Plan for poor air quality to continue. An Air Quality Alert is active until 9pm tonight, but these are often extended so make sure you’re staying updated on the latest.
Fire danger is high again today. A Red Flag Warning will remain active until tonight. Dry surface conditions, gusty winds, and hot temperatures could produce large plumes of smoke and increase potential for rapid fire growth. We will continue to monitor growth on the Flat Fire today.
There is a chance for isolated storms to develop this afternoon. There is moisture being funneled in from the south, which could fuel thunderstorms today through Wednesday. For the most part, storms should stay in southern Oregon but there is a slight chance each afternoon. Gusty winds and lightning near storms will bring the threat of wildfires. Wednesday might be more showery versus stormy, but storm potential remains slight.
A Local Alert Weather Day has been issued for Tuesday as well.
