Heavy mountain snow begins today, wintry weather across the high desert tonight

BEND, Ore (KTVZ) -

We’ve issued a Local Alert Weather Day for Wednesday due to the heavy mountain snow we’re expecting this week and areas of snow in the high desert. It won’t exactly be an Alert Day for everyone–many areas will see pretty typical wintry weather. Local travel will be impacted and the mountains will be dangerous to pass.

Mountain and high elevation snow should begin after sunset tonight. Snow and rain will fall in the high desert at first but snow levels drop on Wednesday. Snow showers will continue off and on Wednesday for the Tri-Counties before tapering off on Thursday. Mountain snow, however, will continue through Thursday.

A Winter Storm Warning will be active for the Cascades, eastern slopes, and areas south of Bend through 4pm Thursday. Heavy mountain snow and gusty winds will make for hazardous mountain travel. Consider postponing your travel plans if possible.

We have refined our snow totals for the week. The mountains will see between 1-2 feet, but likely fall right in the middle of that. Bend could end up with an inch or two while areas like La Pine and Sunriver will see another 2-4”.

The region will get a full clearing just in time for the weekend as temperatures heat into the mid 40s and lower 50s.

Happy Tuesday! Have a nice day.
