Freezing fog remains in areas of the high desert, clear south of Bend once again

Bend, Ore (KTVZ)— The freezing fog remains an issue in Central Oregon today as the mist is persistent. There is clearing in southern Deschutes County as La Pine is enjoying the warm rays of the sun, but Bend is still socked in.

This foggy pattern is occurring in the cold air so freezing fog is a result. The rime ice is forming once again on the tree branches and any object that is below freezing.  This image is from the Henkle Butte cam at around 10am today. This shows the rime ice feathering away from the metal poles and the flocking of the trees in the background.  This is common across Central Oregon today.

The icy and misty pattern will persist into the night as the area has yet to break free from this pattern. The ridge of high-pressure overhead, pushing down on the earth, is starting to show signs of breaking down. This will allow the mist to mix out and the sun to arrive.  The mercury in the thermometer has yet to rise above freezing this week as a result. I am hopeful for us to reach 40 today, but that will be a tall task once again as the fog is winning the day once again.

The chance to see some sunshine in Bend and points north will improve Thursday as the ridge breaks down.  At the same time we are expecting to see some warming rays of sunshine, there will be a blast of arctic air arriving. The highs on Thursday should be able to get above freezing is the sun busts through early in the day, but if not, it will be hard to make it to 30. My forecast has us into the middle 30s, but only if the sun pokes through the mist.

Friday will be partly to mostly cloudy with little fog in the area left. But the cold air mass arriving from the northwest will only allow us to reach the low 30s anyway. Basically, the same result as this week, cold weather, but just a different way of achieving it.

Saturday and Sunday will be slightly warmer with highs in the 40s.  Low 40s Saturday followed by the middle 40s on Sunday will feel flat out balmy give our weeks temperature profile.

Monday may see a passing shower south of Deschutes County, but variably cloudy skies will prevail in the Tri-Counties.

Tuesday and Wednesday of next week look to see the temperature readings in the low 50s.

Please, Stay safe.
