Winter Weather Advisory, Mountain snow, low elevations wintry mix

KTVZ

Moving forward through the new work week, with President's Day included, we will see a decent persistent pattern of snow across the Cascades. There will about 2 - 3" of new snow each day that will get the resorts much more up to speed as far as seasonal snowfall is concerned.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place from tonight through Tuesday night for the Cascades and east slopes. The snow level will be over 4000 feet this week, but lower at night. This means that there will not be much accumulation of snow across the high desert, except a light, wet snow overnight. La Pine and Sisters may see an inch or so, but generally this is a "mountain event" all week.

An area of low pressure is south of Oregon today, that is trying to provide some moisture to southern Deschutes County into the night. Not much will arrive. The main feature for the snow this week is a low dropping in from the Gulf of Alaska.

This low will bring in cold air and moisture from the ocean. It will pass slowly north of Oregon, along the Canadian border, and be in just the right spot to give us snow for several days as it passes west to east.

The mountains will gobble up most of the moisture leave little for the high desert. Travel may be tricky overnight and during the morning commute as the roads will ice up a bit.

Stay safe.
