Mild pattern to close out February, spotty showers this weekend

Bend, Ore (KTVZ) – Friday will be mostly sunny and mild with the mercury in the thermometer reaching the upper 50s and possibly the low 60s. The sky conditions will be partly cloudy, and it will be a pleasant day to take a hike or ride a bike. Snow riding conditions have not been great this year and as we close out February, the warmer weather will make for more soft snow than fluffy. Still a Bluebird Day is expected.
Saturday will be mostly cloudy as a passing shower may make it into the region. The air is very dry and the chance that any rain makes it to the ground is still up for debate. The overall pattern will be defined as a mild and mostly cloudy day but keep the rain gear handy.
A ridge of high pressure is still impacting the west but will be yielding to the east as a large trough moves east across the Pacific toward the west coast. The trough will help to introduce the moisture we will see on Saturday and provide us with some spotty showers on Sunday. Not a washout by any stretch of the imagination but keep the rain gear handy. Temperatures will be in the 50s both Saturday and Sunday so rain, not snow, is expected.
Sunday is the beginning of the meteorological spring, the period of March, April, and May. These months indicate the official record keeping months for what we meteorologists define as Spring due to the consistency of the dates. The Astronomical Spring begins this year on March 20th, at 7:46 am pacific time, the Vernal Equinox. That is when the direct rays of the sun are over the Equator, equal daylight and darkness.
Monday will be mostly sunny and mild with highs in the middle to upper 50s. The first week of the meteorological spring will be mild and “spring-like” as temps may hit 60 on Tuesday. Rain and cooler weather arrive by next Wednesday as highs will top out in the upper 40s and low 50s. High elevation snow is also possible by mid-week.
