DCSO stepping up Memorial Day weekend traffic patrols

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start to the summer vacation and travel season. More importantly, Memorial Day is for remembering those heroes who died while serving in our country’s armed forces.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday it will be adding additional deputies to our roadways over the upcoming holiday weekend to focus on aggressive and distracted driving behaviors that often contribute to crashes.

Deputies will specifically focus on drivers violating Oregon speed laws, as well as drivers using a cellphone or other electronic device while behind the wheel. These added deputies will be on the streets starting Fridayand these focused traffic safety patrols will continue through Monday. Additionally, all of our deputies working over the holiday weekend will be looking for intoxicated or impaired drivers.

Those wanting to report an aggressive or suspected impaired driver can do so by calling non-emergency dispatch at 541–693–6911 or by dialing 911. The information you can expect to be asked will include your current location and direction of travel, a vehicle description (license plate if possible), and what the vehicle is doing that caused you to call. You will also be asked for your name and telephone number, as law enforcement may want to follow up with you about the other vehicle.
