Prineville man killed in Hwy. 26 rollover crash

A 20-year-old Prineville man was killed Friday afternoon in the rollover crash of his pickup truck on U.S. Highway 26 about nine miles northwest of Prineville, Oregon State Police reported.

Troopers and Crook County sheriff’s deputies responded around 3:45 p.m. to the crash near milepost 17, OSP Sgt. Michael Berland said.

An investigation determined David Thompson was at the wheel of a 2004 Nissan Frontier pickup that was heading east on the highway when it left the road for unknown reasons and rolled over into the eastbound ditch, Berland said.

Thompson, who was alone in the pickup, was thrown during the crash and died at the scene. Berland said investigators determined Thompson was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

OSP also was assisted at the scene by ODOT and Crook County Fire and Rescue. The highway was limited to one lane for several hours.
