Gov. Brown orders flags to half-staff in McCain’s honor
(Update: Governor extends order for public flags to half-staff)
Governor Kate Brown on Monday ordered all flags at Oregon public institutions be flown at half-staff immediately until sunset on the day of the interment in honor of Senator John McCain.
“We lost an American hero. Senator McCain’s maverick sensibility meant he faced disagreement from both sides of the aisle. But, regardless of where he stood, his colleagues always knew his style was deeply rooted in an unflinching commitment to our country,” Governor Kate Brown said. “Dan and I are sending condolences to the entire McCain family during this difficult time. May his legacy continue to live on.” The White House issued a national flag-order at 4:09 p.m. EST today, the full presidential proclamation is available here. Her initial order, issued Sunday, was until sunset Monday.
Oregon lawmakers offered their condolences and thoughts late Saturday upon learning of McCain’s passing.
“America lost a true icon today,” Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., said on his Twitter feed. “John McCain devoted his life to the service of others.”
“From his bravery in Vietnam, to his dedication to the people of Arizona in the House and Senate, John McCain was a true hero who exemplified what it means to be a public servant,” Walden added.
Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., also took to Twitter and remarked: “A lion of the US Senate, a patriot, a true American hero, a father, husband, son – rest in peace, Senator McCain, you’ve completed your last tour of duty.”
Fellow Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., issued this statement:
“I am deeply saddened to learn of John McCain’s passing. He led a courageous and remarkable life, made tremendous sacrifices, and carried a deep love for our nation. He was a true American hero, and it was an honor to serve with him in the Senate. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
