Bend mother arraigned on aggravated murder charge in son’s shooting

A 28-year-old Bend woman was arrested at St. Charles Bend on Tuesday and arraigned from jail Wednesday morning on an aggravated murder charge after she allegedly shot and killed her disabled 7-year-old son and took an overdose of pills in an attempt to kill herself early last week.

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel said Tuesday that a grand jury on Monday returned a secret Indictment charging Tashina Aleine Jordan with aggravated murder, accused of fatally shooting her 7-year-old son, Mason Jordan.

Hummel said she Jordan arrested Tuesday at St. Charles Bend and taken to the Deschutes County Jail, where she was booked and held without bail on the single charge Monday afternoon.

Jordan was arraigned on the indictment Wednesday morning by Judge Randy Miller in a video hookup from the jail. Three court-appointed attorneys were approved and a case-status hearing scheduled for Sept. 24 at 1:30 p.m. before Judge Wells Ashby, court records showed.

The district attorney told NewsChannel 21 he will decide in the next 1-2 months whether to seek the death penalty in the case.

“I do the same thing in every aggravated murder case — review facts, consult with family, law enforcement, my staff and defense counsel, then conduct a proportionality analysis to see where this case fits in relation to every other aggravated murder case Deschutes County has prosecuted. Then I make ny decision,” Hummel said.

Earlier, Hummel issued this statement:

“Our community mourns the loss of Mason Jordan, who by all accounts was a wonderful and loving child. I commend the Bend Police for conducting a thorough and professional investigation in spite of the emotional trauma inherent in an investigation of this type. I thank the medical staff at St. Charles Hospital who provided excellent care to Tashina Jordan while also accommodating the needs of the investigating officers. And I thank the grand jurors who took their oath to heart by paying close attention to the evidence that was presented to them, even when it was painful to do so.”

Hummel said Jordan is presumed innocent and has the opportunity to contest the allegations. Her first court hearing is set for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

On Monday, August 20, police and fire medics were called to the 20000 block of Mt. Hope Lane around 5:45 p.m. on a report of a woman found unconscious in a home by a family member who called 911.

The family member and first responders performed life-saving efforts, and she was taken to the hospital with what police called “a life-threatening condition” and the DA later confirmed was a drug overdose Her young son also was found in the home with a fatal gunshot wound.

Police said they found notes at the scene and other evidence to indicate she was a suspect in the shooting of her child, followed by an attempted suicide.

Jordan was the primary caretaker of her son, who suffered brain bleeds as an infant and lapsed into a coma before reawakening.

He was unable to feed, bathe or dress himself and used a wheelchair.
