(Update: Suspect in downtown Portland shooting dies at hospital)

Authorities are investigating after an officer-involved shooting in downtown Portland early Sunday morning. Police said the suspect in an earlier shooting that injured two people later died at an area hospital.

Portland Police have not released the name of those involved, but say officers were patrolling when they heard shots being fired and engaged with a suspect. No officers were injured but the person who was shot was taken to a local hospital.

Police later said the person involved in the shooting had died at the hospital. The name was withheld pending identification and notification of family by the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that Portland Police officers only engaged one person after that person had been involved in a shooting where two other persons were shot and injured,” police said in an update Sunday afternoon.

Early information is that officers patrolling the area of Southwest Third Avenue and Harvey Milk Street heard shots fired, “engaged a subject” and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

A gun has been recovered from the scene, and an area of downtown Portland was closed for the investigation.

Portland Police detectives and the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office are investigating. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
