(Update: More details from police, suspect identified)

A police call to a reported dispute between roommates at a southeast Bend mobile home park led to a five-hour standoff Wednesday after a man threw a hammer at a police lieutenant, narrowly missing the officer, police said. It took chemical agents to bring a peaceful resolution.

Officers were called around 4:30 p.m. to the reported dispute at the Pines Mobile Home Park on Brosterhous Road, Lt. Clint Burleigh said. They soon learned the male roommate, later identified as Tyler Lewis Scott, 37, was throwing items inside the home.

Officers knocked on the door, which the man opened and then quickly shut, Burleigh said.

A police lieutenant was walking by a double-pane window when Scott threw something against the window, shattering the inside pane.

Officers contacted a female roommate, who was inside the home, standing by an open window, and helped her leave, while a separate male acquaintance came out on his own, Burleigh said.

Scott also came out of the home and confronted police, throwing a hammer that narrowly missed the lieutenant. Burleigh said Scott quickly retreated back into the home and did not respond to numerous requests for him to come out.

As the standoff continued, the Central Oregon Emergency Response Team (CERT) was activated. CERT members and negotiators spent several hours attempting to de-escalate the situation and have Scott come out, but he refused.

Meanwhile, detectives who were assisting officers applied for and were granted a search warrant for the home.

CERT members eventually introduced chemical agents into the home, and Scott came out a short time later, around 9:30 p.m., complying with police requests and being taken into custody without further incident, Burleigh said.

Scott was treated by Bend Fire and Rescue medics before being taken to the St. Charles Emergency Department, where he remained late Wednesday night, accompanied by police.

Burleigh said Scott faces charges of menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree attempted assault and attempted assault of a public safety officer.
