Phishing attempts on Oregon election officials increase
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s elections director says the voting system in the state has never been more accurate or secure, though the number of phishing attempts targeting elections officials has increased here and elsewhere.
Oregon Elections Director Steve Trout told The Associated Press that he himself has been hit by a dozen attempts since July, including from someone pretending to be from the Department of Justice.
Emails determined by Trout’s security team to be phishing attempts are sent to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The department says it has not attributed the notable phishing attempts directed at critical infrastructure around America on any nation state or other actor.
