Grand jury: Portland police justified in fatal shooting
(Update: Portland man arrested for striking protester, says man jumped in front of him)
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A grand jury has found two Portland police officers were justified when they fatally shot a 27-year-old man last month.
A small protest including family members of the man killed broke out after the grand jury’s decision was announced Wednesday.
Investigative files made public Wednesday show Patrick Kimmons was shot nine times on Sept. 30.
Police say Sgt. Garry Britt and Officer Jeffrey Livingston were patrolling downtown when they heard gunshots.
Police say Kimmons had shot and seriously injured two people who were fighting and approached the officers with a gun in his hand when they opened fire.
Britt and Livingston fired at Kimmons a combined 12 times.
He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Later Wednesday, a man was arrested on suspicion of fourth-degree assault and other charges after police say he drove into a demonstration and struck a person blocking a Portland street. But he says the man jumped in front of his truck.
The driver, Mark A. Dickerson, told The Associated Press Wednesday evening that he had business at the courthouse and was trying to park when a man jumped in front of his vehicle.
The protester was not injured.
Dickerson was arrested on suspicion of fourth-degree assault, reckless endangerment and reckless driving.
The protester was not injured.
The people demonstrating were family members of Kimmons, protesting the grand jury finding.
