Portland police round up chickens on the loose

KTVZ

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Humane Society rounded up dozens of chickens that were abandoned in Portland’s Pearl District over the weekend.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports police got a call reporting the roosters Saturday and contacted Oregon State Police’s Fish and Wildlife Division for help.

Cecil Reniche-Smith of the Oregon Humane Society’s Technical Animal Rescue Team says state authorities weren’t able to pick up the 43 roosters and hens, and Multnomah County Animal Services officials weren’t available Saturday night.

The rescue team came up with a temporary solution to secure the chickens overnight. Members built an overnight pen using green construction fencing, cardboard and tarps.

The county’s animal team picked up the chickens Sunday.

Authorities have not said who abandoned the chickens or why.
