EMS crew happens upon fire threatening Madras homes

(Update: Correcting that EMS, not firefighters found fire)

A Jefferson County EMS crew returning from a medical call early Wednesday morning came upon and called in firefighters to put out a fire in juniper brush that was threatening two homes about 20 feet away, officials said.

Shortly before 1 a.m., t he medics “rounded the corner and saw 10- to 15-foot flame lengths” in the brush by a manufactured home park in the 400 block of Southwest Roosevelt Street , said Lt. Kirk Hagman, a firefighter/paramedic with Jefferson County Fire District No. 1

Responding firefighters quickly put out the blaze, which burned an area about 50 feet long and 15 feet wide.

There were no injuries and no damage to either home, though three lawn decorations were destroyed: two birdhouses and a solar light in a flower pot.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
