Redmond girl, 16, charged in injury DUII crash
(Update: More details on driver, passengers)
A 16-year-old Redmond girl was charged with drunken driving after losing control of a car on icy South Canal Boulevard south of Redmond early Saturday morning and striking a power pole, shearing it from the ground, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.
The driver and two female passengers from Prineville, ages 18 and 15, were taken to St. Charles Redmond with non-life-threatening injuries, Sgt. Aaron Harding said.
Deputies were called around 12:25 a.m. to the reported crash near the intersection of Canal Boulevard and Helmholtz Way, Harding said.
They learned the girl was heading north on Canal at the wheel of a black 2013 Toyota Camry and lost control on the “icy and extremely slick” road, Harding said in a news release.
An investigation determined the driver was impaired by alcohol, Harding said. She was charged with DUII and was released to parents at the hospital as the investigation continues.
While the power pole was sheared off, the lines stayed intact and there were no reported outages, the sergeant said. However, South Canal Boulevard was closed for several hours while Central Electric Cooperative crews repaired the power pole. Traffic was detoured around the location until repairs were complete, Harding said.
Oregon State Police, Redmond Fire & Rescue and the county Road Department assisted at the scene.
