Freezing fog blankets High Desert; flights canceled, diverted

A mix of snow, rain, freezing fog and mixed precipitation moved into the High Desert overnight, making roads slick amid near-freezing temperatures and prompting Jefferson County School District 509-J to cancel classes Tuesday. Freezing fog moved in during the morning and by late in the day was canceling or diverting numerous flights to or from Redmond Airport.

Culver school buses were on snow routes, according to the district. There was no word of other school delays or cancellations.

At 8 a.m., the Madras Airport reported freezing fog and 30 degrees, while Redmond Airport had 32 degrees and mixed precipitation. It was mostly cloudy and 32 degrees at Bend Airport and cloudy and 36 at Prineville Airport.

As freezing fog blanked much of the High Desert, Redmond Airport reported half-mile visibility and RDM’s flight status page by evening showed numerous canceled, delayed or diverted flights.

Meanwhile, the Sisters School District announced its Tuesday boys’ and girls’ basketball games had been rescheduled to Thursday.

The National Weather Service extended its winter weather advisory until 9 a.m. Wednesday for the east slopes of the Cascades, including La Pine and Sunriver. Forecasters predicted 3-6 inches of snow and ice of up to 1/10 of an inch, and warned travelers to plan on slippery roads.
