Child’s body found in Stayton house fire; arson suspected

A child died Friday in a Stayton house fire authorities are saying was apparent arson.

Oregon State Police said Saturday that investigators remained on scene at the house fire scene on Washington Street. The fire was reported around 3 p.m. on Friday in Stayton, a Marion County town of about 8,100 located 12 miles southeast of Salem.

OSP Lt. Cari Boyd said the work was suspended overnight for safety reasons but resumed at daylight.

While confirming the body found in the home was that of a child, Boyd said further identifying information or details are not yet being released.
