Redmond HS boys swim team wins district title
The Redmond High School boys swim team won the 2019 5A Intermountain Conference district championship on Friday in Hood River.
Their first district championship in a decade, the RHS boys beat out Pendleton by just two points to clinch the title.
“I’m so proud of how our team swam on Friday,” Denise Maich, Panthers head swim coach said. “This win is the result of a lot of hard work, determination and passion. This is a huge victory for the RHS swimming program, and really just the beginning of many great things to come.”
Freshman Ryan Konop led the Panthers team by winning two individual events. He was also a member of the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Konop’s individual wins in 100-yard freestyle (50.49 seconds) and 100-yard backstroke (58.30 seconds) automatically qualify him for the OSAA 5A State Championship Swim Meet on Feb. 15-16 at Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton.
The boys 200-yard freestyle relay, comprised of Konop, sophomores Gavin Tobish and Jacen McGowan and senior Augie Tobish, finished in third place at the district meet with a time of 1:36.52. Their freestyle relay time also qualifies them for a spot at the state competition.
The 5A IMC conference is newly created this year, allowing all event winners to automatically become district meet record holders in each event. The IMC is comprised of Redmond high schools, Redmond and Ridgeview High, Pendleton, The Dalles and Hood River Valley high schools.
