KTVZ

The Bend-La Pine School Board voted Tuesday night to name Bend’s newest school North Star Elementary.

The new 600-student school, located at the corner of O.B. Riley and Cooley roads, is scheduled to open this fall.

“North Star is the brightest star in the Little Dipper constellation and is known for being a reliable navigational tool,” the school district said in their Facebook annnouncement. “This star has been known to symbolize freedom, constancy, stability, focus and the internal compass that guides someone’s life.”

The other two finalist names were for Ruth Reid, an early Bend educator, and Florence Drake, one of the city’s founders.
