Bend man arrested in domestic-violence incident
A day of phone negotiations with police led to the arrest Monday evening of a 47-year-old northeast Bend man on kidnapping and other charges, accused of refusing to let his wife and 2 young children leave their home earlier in the day.
The 42-year-old wife of John Malouf called authorities around 8:30 a.m. Monday to report that her husband would not let her and their two young children leave their home in the 63100 block of Dakota Drive, Lt. Ken Mannix said.
A Bend police officer contacted Malouf to speak with him through the day and work to resolve the issue.
About two hours after the initial call, Malouf’s wife was able to leave the home with their two children, he added.
The Central Oregon Emergency Response Team also was called to the scene later in the day.
As the investigation continued, investigators pieced together a pattern of domestic violence issues involving the couple.
Around 5 p.m., CERT team members contacted Malouf as he came out the front door and took him into custody without further incident, Mannix said.
Malouf was booked into the county jail on charges including two counts of second-degree kidnapping, coercion, fourth-degree assault, harassment and strangulation. Jail officials said he was released from jail early Tuesday after posting 10 percent of his $122,500 bail.
