Big Brothers Big Sisters of C.O. expands to La Pine
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon (BBBSCO) is celebrating their 25th year of defending potential in our region by expanding into the La Pine community. Their plan includes matching 20 local “Littles,” kids who can use a positive role model, with Big Brothers or Big Sisters.
The organization has met with La Pine Mayor Daniel Richer, presented to the Sunriver/ La Pine Rotary, and is reaching out to local businesses in hopes of finding sponsors to help cover the cost of these new matches.
Littles may come from single parent/ guardian homes, need extra help with homework, or struggle with self-esteem.
Several studies have shown that mentoring is linked to improved academic, social, and economic futures. Children perform better in school and make better choices when they know someone cares and is paying attention.
The community benefits as a whole when its youth are making better choices. This program is not only about LaPinians igniting potential in their youth, but also working together to build a brighter future within their own community.
Their own life experiences and the willingness to improve a kid’s life are what qualify mentors to be Big Brothers or Big Sisters. Matches are made based on interests and the sorts of activities the potential Big and Little enjoy. Kids and mentors in the program come from a variety of backgrounds. What activities they share, from mountain biking, to fixing an old car, to playing board games, matters less than the time spent together.
Join Big Brothers Big Sisters for a “BIG” Informational meeting on Thursday May 30 at 6 p.m. at the La Pine Community Center – 16405 1st St., La Pine. Volunteers and parents are welcome to learn about the program. Snacks and beverages provided.
