Giro favorite Evenepoel has ‘a lot of pain’ after crashes in 5th stage
SALERNO, Italy (AP) — Giro d’Italia favorite Remco Evenepoel was involved in a crash caused by a stray dog early in the fifth stage. Kaden Groves edged out Jonathan Milan and Mads Pedersen in a bunch sprint at the end of the 171-kilometer journey from Atripalda to Salerno. Evenepoel was also involved in a second crash late on. The world champion remained 28 seconds behind overall leader Andreas Leknessund. Aurélien Paret-Peintre is two seconds further back in third. Soudal Quick-Step team doctor Toon Cruyt says Evenepoel “has a lot of pain on his right side” and adds that “Stage 6 will be a difficult one for him.”
