S.C. man killed, 6 hurt in fiery Hwy. 20 crash near Vale

A South Carolina man was killed and six people injured when his attempt to pass a motor home resulted in a fiery three-vehicle crash on Highway 20 near Vale Monday afternoon, Oregon State Police reported.

OSP and emergency medics responded around 2:50 p.m. to the three-vehicle crash on Highway 20 at milepost 244,. troopers said.

A preliminary investigation found that Timothy Eviston, 57, of Winnsboro, S. Carolina, was heading east in a Nissan Rogue when he tried to pass a motor home, OSP said.

Eviston’s SUV struck a westbound Ford F-350 pickup truck driven by Jacob Price, 30, of Ontario, Oregon. The pickup then collided with a Ford Expedition pulling a travel trailer and driven by Guillermo Fonseca, 33, of Eagle, Idaho, troopers said.

The pickup, Expedition and travel trailer caught fire after impact.

Eviston sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene, troopers said. Price and Fonseca were taken by ambulance to a hospital, as was a passenger in the Expedition and three juveniles, two by ambulance and one by Life Flight helicopter.

OSP was assisted at the scene by the Malheur County Sheriff’s Office and Vale Fire and Ambulance.
