The Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District on the Deschutes National Forest will open the Cinder Hill Campground and the road up to Paulina Peak in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument on Friday.

The Cinder Hill Campground is a 110-site campground on the Caldera unit of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument near La Pine.

Reservations can be made on Recreation.gov for the Cinder Hill campground beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 29 for dates starting Tuesday, July 2.

The public will be able to access this campground on a first come, first served basis beginning Friday, June 28 at 7:00 a.m. The campground has been closed since the end of the season last year for the removal of trees showing signs of future failure due to insects and disease.

In addition, the road up Paulina Peak will be open no later than 7:00 a.m. on Friday, June 28. The road, which tends to be snow covered until mid-to-late June, was recently graded as is ready for motorized vehicle travel.

While work is complete in Cinder Hill, contractors will continue tree removal along roadsides in the Caldera between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. and equipment will produce noise during those working hours.

” While this work temporarily impacts visitor use in the Caldera, maintaining the health of our forest provides a significant long-term benefit to the public’s enjoyment of the area into the future, ” the announcement said. ” Our goal remains to maintain the beauty of the Caldera and the health of our forest so visitors can enjoy this natural wonder long into the future. ”
