Round one is ending, more heavy snow Friday & Saturday, then bitterly cold

The first big snow of the season has come and gone, except for the Cascades which will continue to see accumulating snow. The totals were rather impressive over the High Desert. This is what I got from the National Weather Service.

Our area resorts have been getting significant snow and Mt. Bachelor has reported over 2 feet of new snow.

Today there will be a bit of a lull in the snowfall as we recover from round one. The temperatures tonight will be in the low 20s and teens after topping out in the low 30s today. The winds will be on the breezy side from the SW at 5 – 10 mph tonight.

Thursday we may see snow showers off and on, but accumulations will be light. This will be a day with a mixture of clouds and sunshine.

The National Weather Service has issued another Winter Storm Warning for SW Deschutes and
western Jefferson Counties along with the spine of the Cascades. The storm warning is for several feet of snow on the Cascades and several inches from La Pine to Sisters and north into Jefferson County. This goes into effect Thursday morning and will last into the pre-dawn hours of Sunday.

The next big system is slate to begin around midnight Friday into Saturday morning. The storm will be another big snow maker with the High Desert possibly seeing about 7 – 10” added to what is left.

Saturday will see the snow most of the day and then it will be followed by a major cold snap. A blast of Arctic Air is going to follow the snow along with windy conditions.

Sunday we can dig out from the snow under mostly sunny skies but the temperatures will be in the teens during the afternoon. After starting out the day Sunday in the single digits, highs Sunday will be near 20. This cold snap will linger into Monday as highs Monday will also be near 20 and lows near zero.

Wind Chill Warnings may be issued as the “feels like” temperatures will be well below zero at times. Wind chill values are a combination of actual temperatures and the wind that make it hard for your body to generate heat. The heat generated by your body blows away very quickly and you need to burn more energy to stay warm, making it “feel like” a much colder air mass is surrounding you.
