Cooler weather returns, mountain snow and high desert rain and mix possible

Our run of above normal temperature readings over the past several days is coming to an end. Spring is bringing with it the usual transitional weather patterns consistent with this time of year.  The mountains are likely to get snow each of the next several days and the high desert will see some light rain and early morning wintry mix.

The temperatures are going to be in the low 50s, which is not far off for this time of year. The overnight lows will hover around the freezing mark.  This temperature profile presents challenging forecasting issues. There will be a chance for some snow to mix with rain overnight, then change to all rain each afternoon. The timing of the precipitation will dictate the precipitation type.  Generally, afternoons will be rain showers, overnights will be a mix.

This is not going to go away until at least next weekend. This annoying pattern of “some rain and some snow” will be with us all week. The mountains will stay cold enough for snow, so travel through mountain passes will be slick and dangerous at times.

There is a very slight chance we may hear the rumble of thunder at some point this weekend.  There is an indication on one of our models that an isolated thunderstorm is possible Saturday in Central Oregon.  Better indications are that the Blue Mountains will hear the roar of thunder, as opposed to the east side of the Cascades.  Just wanted to put this out there in case we did get some lightning. Be aware of this possibility if you are out and about.
