Burglars hit Bend Macy’s store overnight: Dozen cash registers broken into, $4,000 in cash stolen

(Update: Adding video)

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – Bend police were investigating and working to secure video Tuesday to find whoever broke into the Macy’s department store at Bend River Promenade overnight, then forced their way into a dozen cash registers and made off with about $4,000 in cash.

Police responded around 5:30 a.m. to the reported burglary at the store on North Highway 97, Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said.

An employee who received an alarm notification conducted a walk-through of the store and called Deschutes County 911 dispatchers to report the store appeared to have been burglarized.

Miller said officers found evidence of a forced entry on the east side the building, with damage to the doors.

Officers, including K-9 Pluto and his handler, searched the building, but found no one inside.

In the store, police found 12 cash registers broke into, with about $4,000 in cash removed, Miller said.

“We are working on obtaining video from a variety of locations” as part of the ongoing investigation, Miller said, adding that she can’t recall another burglary of a large store “quite like this.”

Macy's corporate communications office provided this statement to NewsChannel 21:

At Macy’s, the safety of our customers and our colleagues is our top priority.  We are working closely with the local police department on this investigation and defer all comments about the case to them.
