Three sculpture options for SE 15th Street-Knott Road roundabout go on display; each honors Caldera HS Wolfpack
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Design renderings of the three proposed art sculptures for the Southeast 15th Street and Knott Road roundabout will be on display at the Larkspur Community Center from April 4-11 and at the downtown Bend Deschutes Public Library from April 12-18.
Community members of all ages are invited to review and provide input on the three finalists’ works of art ,mutually selected by representatives from the Art in Public Places committee and the City of Bend Engineering and Infrastructure Planning Department. The sculpture selected will be included in the public art collection owned by the City of Bend.
The location for this next roundabout sculpture was selected primarily because the southeast Bend neighborhoods are experiencing a tremendous amount of growth.
The proximity of this roundabout to Caldera High School prompted the commission to specify a pack of wolves in honor of Caldera’s Wolf Pack mascot. The student groups and Bend-La Pine Schools staff were drawn to mascot ideas that represent a community.
The school’s website states that, “Students and staff members of Caldera High School are all members of the Wolfpack, representing the greater community, and each individual has the talents and skills to help everyone thrive.”
The three artists are Amanda Markel from Bozeman, Montana; Bryce Pettit from Durango, Colorado; and Jud Turner from Eugene, Oregon. Each artist will be fabricating three to four wolves for this roundabout sculpture. The selected sculpture is anticipated to be installed in the summer of 2025.
“The three final art concepts truly represent a thoughtful interpretation of a wolfpack,” said Romy Mortensen, the president of Art in Public Places. “Each artist has a unique perspective and has designed a sculpture that beautifully aligns with the Caldera High School’s Wolfpack mascot. We look forward to having the community and students share their comments about each proposal.”
Art in Public Places (AIPP) has created a page on its website offering the community the opportunity to contribute their public input online.
