Novels from Asia, Europe and South America vie for International Booker Prize
LONDON (AP) — Novels that depict human struggles in settings that range from rural Argentina to Communist East Germany are among six finalists for the International Booker Prize for translated fiction. The shortlist for the 50,000 pound ($63,000) award includes books by Argentine writer Selva Almada, German author Jenny Erpenbeck and Brazilian writer Itamar Vieira Junior. Also on the list are Ia Genberg of Sweden, Korean writer Hwang Sok-yong and Dutch novelist Jente Posthuma. The winner will be announced May 21 at a ceremony in London. The International Booker Prize is awarded every year to a book of fiction in any language that is translated into English. The prize money is split between the winning author and their translator.
