New Year’s Day $842 million Powerball jackpot winner was just announced in Michigan
(CNN) — The second-largest lottery prize ever won in Michigan has just been claimed after a New Year’s Day drawing – solving a six-month mystery.
The Michigan Lottery announced a group called The Breakfast Club as the winner of an $842 million Powerball jackpot.
The members, who have not been named, have decided to collect their prize as a lump sum of $305 million after taxes, the lottery announced at a Tuesday news conference.
An attorney representing the lottery club spoke on their behalf but didn’t say how many members are part of the group.
“The club members have felt many emotions since realizing their ticket was the one,” the group’s attorney said. “They’ve been elated and overwhelmed, thrilled and nervous. They’ve gone from shock and sleepless nights to giving careful thought as to how this once-in-a-lifetime event will transform their lives.”
Group members plan to travel, prepare for retirement, be more charitable and look forward to “sharing our good fortune with immediate family by helping them realize their dreams,” the club’s attorney said.
And while others would have been in line to collect their earnings the day after the winning numbers were announced, The Breakfast Club said they chose “to take a more deliberate path and ensure we have the right team of advisers in place to help us decide the best way to move forward.”
The winning ticket was purchased at the Food Castle convenience store whose owners also received $50,000 in commission from the Michigan Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
The family-owned store in Grand Blanc plans to donate the entire check to its employees and the community through charitable organizations, the family said.
The Breakfast Club members are recipients of the sixth-largest Powerball prize ever won.
The winning numbers were 12, 21, 42, 44, 49 and Powerball 1. The Power Play multiplier was 3X.
