Hot today, warm next week

Summer officially started this week and it feels like it! Areas across the region have been well above normal this last week and we are expected to have some record-breaking highs today in the 90s. We will continue to be warmer than normal into the first half of next week. Normal highs this time of year are in the middle to upper 70s.  A cold front moves through the region Sunday evening, allowing for a little break from the extreme heat, but we will continue to remain dry and on the warm side.

With breezy conditions on Sunday, fire concerns are heightened. There is a Fire Weather Watch active Sunday for areas directly north-northeast of our region.  We are still in the early beginnings of wildfire season, but be mindful of fire-safety practices and your local fire rules and regulations.

Areas in Southern Deschutes County may see some smoke this evening from a fire that broke out southwest of Medford a couple days ago, since named the Upper Applegate 3900. I will be monitoring air quality as this progresses.

There will be a break in the very warm weather next Thursday, when we reach the middle 70s across the region. This pattern will only last a day or two, and then we’ll heat back up into the 80s.

As always, stay hydrated and dress accordingly. The pavement is hot, so walk your dogs in the early or later hours of the day.

Stay safe.
