DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Thousands of activists and opposition leaders from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party have rallied in the capital, Dhaka. They demanded on Tuesday a democratic transition through an election. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has not yet set a voting timeframe. Yunus took over after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled during a mass uprising. The protests began in July and turned into an anti-government movement. The powerful military has been playing a crucial role in the administration. Major parties, including the BNP, want elections soon. However, they also want time for reforms. The government also granted magistrate powers to military officials for two months.
