Mild to close out Summer 2024, warm start to Autumn
Normally this time of year the afternoon high temperatures top out in the low 70s, tomorrow we will be closer to 80 than 70. The reason for the above normal temps Sunday will be due to the ridge building in the eastern Pacific. There will be some clouds in northern Oregon and Washington State, but should not impact our heating process here in Central Oregon.
Monday will be very similar to Sunday with highs in the low 80s and mostly sunny. A few high clouds may drift overhead, but no rain is expected.
Moving into the first week of Fall we should be warmer than normal. Highs will be more reminiscent of early September than late September as we hit the 80s on Monday. Tuesday will be very warm and possibly hot as some models are expecting near 90° heat.
Cooler weather is likely on Wednesday as some clouds move in and there is a slight chance for some rain.
The first day of Fall 2024 is Tomorrow, Sunday September 22nd. At 5:44 am the direct rays of the Sun will be over the equator, the Autumnal Equinox. There will be equal parts daylight and darkness on that day and we begin our journey toward winter as the days will be shorter than the nights until next Spring.
It is a little misleading when you look at the sunrise and sunset times for Sunday… 6:53 am – 7:01 pm. Not exactly equal parts daylight and darkness. But the sunrise and sunset times are based on the crown of the sun breaching the horizon for sunrise, and the crown of the sun dropping below the horizon for sunset. The equinox is calculated by the center of the sun breaching the horizon for sunrise (approximately 6:57 am), and the center of the sun crossing the horizon at sunset (approximately 6:57 pm).
There is also a theory about of the light bending and timing being off in that manner, another about the elliptical orbit, one more considering the non-spherical earth, and a few others. I like the center of the sun crossing the horizon, it makes sense and the math works out each equinox, Autumnal and Vernal.
