Heating up as we begin the first week of Fall, rain possible Wednesday
The temperatures are heating up as we move into the first week of Autumn 2024 with highs in the 90s Tuesday. This warmer than normal weather will increase the wildfire activity in the region, especially the Little Lava Fire west of Sunriver. The heat and the winds expected Tuesday and Wednesday will increase the wildfire behavior so the firefighters are working diligently to get perimeters established and hot spots contained.
Tuesday will see the mercury in the thermometer rise into the 90s, pushing into near record territory. The record high for Bend on September 24th is 94, and I am forecasting a 90° day. Redmond is forecast to hit 92 and the record is 94, and that is well within range for re-writing the books. Normal high temperatures in Central Oregon are around the low 70s. Expect this warm period to be short lived as a cold front moves through on Wednesday along with some light rain.
The cold front will bring gusty winds ahead and behind it so the fires in the Bachelor Area complex will be fanned. This, as mentioned above, is not great news for our firefighters. The light rain may help a bit, but usually, in this area the light rain mainly generates gusty winds.
Once we get past the light rain Wednesday, we are heading back into a dry and mild pattern. The highs on Thursday and Friday will be in the upper 70s followed by cooler and dry weather this weekend. Highs, at the moment, are expected to be in the low 70s Saturday through Monday.
