Spotty showers late Wednesday, dry and mild into the weekend
After a quick round of 90° temperatures today, a cold front will arrive Wednesday and cool the region down. The front will be accompanied by some brisk south or southwest winds ahead of the passage, then some dry and cooler air pushes in behind it from the west or northwest. Gusts near 30mph are possible Wednesday afternoon or evening along with some light rain.
The rain will not be impressive, at best a tenth of an inch, but it is something. The rainfall has been sparse to say the least, in Bend since June 1st, we collected less than a half an inch of water in the gauges. The most we have measured in one day is only a tenth of an inch, on July 29th and August 14th.
Once this weak front crosses the area the temperatures will be in the upper 70s to low 80s. Not a big cool down, and we should still be above normal through the weekend. Normal high temps for late September are in the low 70s.
The concern I have regarding the front tomorrow will be the gusty winds. Today we should hit 90, the ground is dry and there are still burning wildfires in the area. The Little Lava near Sunriver may generate some more smoke as the interior burns out. The eastern perimeter is currently contained, but there may be some spotting and fire growth to the east with the south and southwest winds. Smoky conditions may return on Wednesday and Thursday in southern Deschutes County as a result.
Dry and mild weather will define our pattern late in the week and into the weekend. Enjoy the mild weather, apart from the smoke we are going to be fairly quiet and pleasant.
