Ranked voting will determine the winner of Maine’s 2nd Congressional District

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — The ranked choice voting process in Maine will now determine the winner of a key congressional race. Ballots from across Maine’s 2nd Congressional District are being transported to the state capital, where they’ll be re-scanned into a computer next week. Republican challenger Austin Theriault’s campaign voiced support for the process on Friday. Democratic Rep. Jared Golden’s campaign said it’s not needed because he’s already won reelection outright. Under ranked voting, the lesser choices made by voters for the last-place finisher are reallocated until one candidate gains a majority of the total. The result could be pivotal with control of the U.S. House of Representatives at stake.
