5A soccer championships: Summit boys lose 2-1 heartbreaker in title defense; young Lady Lava Bears hold heads high after 4-1 loss

HILLSBORO, Ore. (KTVZ) -- On Saturday morning, the Summit boys looked to defend their state title against La Salle.

The Storm led 1-0 at halftime after a beautiful header from Senior Kaden Roskowski. In the second half, La Salle scored on a penalty kick after a controversial call against the Storm. Late in the second half, La Salle found themselves with another penalty kick and it secured them a 2-1 victory over the Storm.

The team was heartbroken, but the run back to the state title game was nothing short of amazing. In four years, the Storm have been to three state title games, with two first-place trophies to show for it. The dominance for the Storm has been ongoing for seven years, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see them back in this game at some point soon.

Saturday afternoon, the Bend High Lava Bears kicked off their girls' state championship game against Wilsonville. From the jump Wilsonville was out firing. The Wildcats scored two goals in the first half and two in the second half to beat Bend 4-1.

The Lava Bears' lone goal came from Shea Manfredi in the second half.

It was a sad ending to their unbelievable season, but one they held their heads high for. A second-place finish seemed out of reach for the Lava Bears, but they never believed that.

Bend came into the playoffs third in the IMC and the 7-seed. They upset #2 La Salle and #3 Caldera on the road to their first title game in a decade. The team has 18 returners next year, and with the experience under their belt, they will be feared for many years to come.
