BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- An 89-year-old Bend man was critically injured Friday evening when he failed to stop at a stop sign on Cooley Road, stopped in the middle of Highway 20 and his car was hit by an oncoming car, Oregon State Police said Saturday.

Troopers, Bend police and Bend Fire & Rescue medics were called to the 6:15 p.m. crash at the intersection of Highway 20 and Cooley Road, Trooper Robin Katter said.

An investigation determined that Donald Richard Johnson, 89, was driving a Toyota Tercel and failed to obey a stop sign, pulled into the travel lane of Highway 20 and stopped.

A 20-year-old Sisters woman driving a Jeep Wrangler tried to maneuver around Johnson's car, Katter said, but Johnson then began to drive away, and the Jeep struck the car on the driver's side door.

Johnson and passenger Julia Johnson, 77, also of Bend, were taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend, with the driver in critical condition, according to the trooper. No other injuries were reported.

A condition was not available Saturday for Donald Johnson, a hospital house supervisor said. Julia Johnson remained in good condition Saturday.
