Last day of Autumn, rainy and mild weekend, very wet pattern ahead

As we close out Autumn 2024 and enter the Winter our temperatures are on the mild side of normal.  Look for the highs to be in the low 50s and upper 40s through the holiday week ahead.  The pattern will also be rainy with a wintry mix of rain and snow at times through at least next Thursday.

The wet pattern will begin in earnest tomorrow, even though we have seen some light precipitation today.  The timing of the showers is varied each day as wave after wave of light rain and wintry mix arrive.

Saturday begins our first in the series of rainy days, with the rain and mix of rain and snow beginning before sunrise. There will be periods of rain throughout the day, so if you are out and about, keep the rain gear handy.

Sunday will be the opposite with respect to timing as the rain will arrive in the afternoon and linger into the night. Again, the precipitation type will be a mix of rain/snow and should end before midnight with little to no accumulation of snow.

Monday will see the rain arrive later in the day and be in the form of all rain. The temperatures will be above freezing as we go through the night, so a cold rain will linger into Tuesday.

The rain on Tuesday morning is likely to end before sunrise, but as the day moves along there may be a spot shower or two, but nothing widespread.

The dry pattern will be present on Christmas Day, but some snow and rain will return in the afternoon. This will provide slick roads and reduced visibility in the evening.  There is not much accumulation in the forecast at this time, but that may change. Not technically a White Christmas, but we may see some flakes.

The rainy and wintry mix pattern will continue through the rest of the week.

Our winter season defined.

There are two definitions of winter in the meteorological community, the Astronomical and Meteorological. The Astronomical is based on the relationship between the Earth and the Sun, the Winter Solstice is when the direct rays of the Sun are over the Tropic of Cancer. The shortest period of daylight hours occurs (commonly referred to as the shortest day of the year, even though it still 24 hours long). The Meteorological is defined by the three coldest months of the year in the northern hemisphere. This is the more consistent time frame and is used for record keeping.

Please stay safe.
