BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) - Central Oregon skies lit up with color over the weekend as the northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, made a breathtaking appearance. Viewers from across the region shared their photos with KTVZ News, capturing the vibrant hues of green, pink, and purple dancing across the night sky.

The northern lights are a natural light display caused by energized particles from the sun interacting with Earth’s magnetic field. Typically visible near the Arctic Circle, strong geomagnetic storms can push the auroras much farther south, giving Central Oregon residents a rare treat.

Thanks to our viewers who sent in these incredible shots! Scroll through the gallery above to see how the phenomenon lit up skies across the High Desert.
