Heat wave remains, storms possible south and east Tuesday

A Local Alert Weather Day has been issued for today and Tuesday. Today will be the hottest day in a string of 90° days, topping out about 25° above our normal 72° for June 9th. The well above normal temperatures along with the time of year has prompted the Local Alert Weather Team to issue the alert for today.  The hot pattern will linger for one more day, Tuesday but that is not the reason for the Alert Day tomorrow.

There will be some strong storm migrating across the southeastern portion of our viewing area late tomorrow that may bring some gusty winds and small hail.  The threat of severe storms is very low, but not zero in SE Deschutes and SE Crook.  The storms will be able to generate some gusts near 50 mph and possibly 60, categorizing them as a severe storm.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under a General Risk for thunderstorms and a sliver of Deschutes and Crook under the Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms (gusts near 60 and or 1” hail),

No tornadic activity is expected and most of the storms will be over the high desert.  Highway 97 will not be impacted by the stronger storms other than some windy conditions, but a rogue storm cannot be ruled out, so keep alert for late afternoon storms just in case.

Wednesday will see the heat wave end and temperatures topping out in the middle 80s. Still above normal, but about 10° cooler.  Expect the cooling trend to continue through the rest of the week with highs in the 70s through the weekend.
