Hot temperatures and a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon

Today will be hot but not quite as hot as yesterday. Afternoon highs will reach the upper 80s and low to mid 90s. Following yesterday’s record breaking heat, we are now progressively cooling. Temperatures will drop back down to near normal, in the low to mid 70s, by Friday.

Hot temperatures today are helping to create some instability in our atmosphere. In addition to the heat, a little bit of moisture is moving in and an upper level disturbance swinging through will shake things up just enough to see some thunderstorms develop later this afternoon. Best chances will be through Crook County and southern Deschutes County, however, the chance that something clips Bend or Redmond is possible. Best chances for storm development will be in Southern Oregon.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed a majority of Central Oregon under a “general” risk for thunderstorms. Areas to our south are under a “marginal risk” for severe thunderstorms (level 1/5). Gusty winds, small hail, and lightning are possible.

We have issued a level one Local Alert Weather Day today for this reason.

Timing for storms will begin in the mid afternoon, around 3-5pm, and will continue until the sun sets. Storm chances will then move east on Wednesday.

Most storms won’t produce heavy rains but they won’t be entirely dry either. However, with the recent dry and hot pattern, you’ll want to keep an eye out for any potential new fires. We are early in the season but 3-5 days with temperatures in the 90s can dry out grass pretty quickly.

Have a nice day and stay safe!
