Bentz’s Bill Seeks Federal Land Transfer to The Dalles for Water Supply Expansion
WASHINGTON (KTVZ) – Congressman Cliff Bentz’s (R-OR) legislation aimed at transferring 150 acres of U.S. Forest Service land to the City of The Dalles has moved one step closer to becoming law. The bill, known as the Dalles Watershed Development Act, was approved by the House Natural Resources Committee this week.
The proposed land transfer is crucial for the City of The Dalles, which relies on its municipal watershed to provide approximately 80% of its annual water supply. The legislation would allow the city to expand its reservoir and streamline the process for maintaining and protecting the watershed, which is vital for water quality and public safety.
Bentz introduced the bill after recognizing the need to alleviate bureaucratic hurdles that slow progress on water infrastructure improvements. "The City of The Dalles has a strong working relationship with the Forest Service, but expanding the reservoir on federal land has been hindered by prolonged administrative processes," Bentz said. "This legislation will help the city enhance its water storage capacity, which is essential for its future growth."
Now, having passed the markup phase in committee, the legislation will be sent to the full House for a vote before moving to the Senate for consideration.
