PORTLAND, Ore. (KGW) — Intel Corp. will begin laying off approximately 529 people at four Oregon campuses starting next Tuesday, July 15, according to a WARN notice filed Tuesday.

The layoffs are set to occur at Intel's Aloha campus, along with the Ronler Acres, Hawthorne Farms and Intel Jones campuses in Hillsboro.

"As we announced earlier this year, we are taking steps to become a leaner, faster and more efficient company. Removing organizational complexity and empowering our engineers will enable us to better serve the needs of our customers and strengthen our execution," Intel said in a statement.

"We are making these decisions based on careful consideration of what’s needed to position our business for the future, and we will treat people with care and respect as we complete this important work."

The company in mid-June announced plans to lay off between 15% to 20% of its worldwide factory workers, citing affordability challenges and the current financial position of the company.

Based on a list filed with the WARN notice, the affected positions in Oregon include engineers working on cloud systems, development tools software, product development, system and software optimization and program managers.

The decision comes about four months after Lip-Bu Tan took over as CEO from Pat Gelsinger. Since then, Intel made a deal to sell off a majority stake in its Altera programable chips unit to a private equity firm, according to a report from the Portland Business Journal, a KGW News partner.

Intel employs roughly 107,000 workers worldwide and 20,000 in Hillsboro.
