Heat wave ahead, temperatures in the 90s through the weekend

BEND, Ore (KTVZ).  High pressure is dominating the western half of the country this week and will provide the dry and much warmer weather as the week moves along.

Thursday starts the heating process as the mercury in the thermometer will hit the upper 80s to low 90s most locations. This is the start of our medium range, but impactful, heat wave. Highs from Friday through at least Tuesday will be in the middle 90s.  If you are planning any outdoor activities, stay hydrated and be mindful of anything that may start a fire.  The fuel on the ground is very dry and if sparked, will fire up quickly and spread rapidly. I don't expect to see numbers in the triple digits, but upper 90s may be obtained in Warm Springs and or Madras over the weekend.

The definition of a heat wave in Central Oregon is a string of at least three days of 90° weather.  The forecast is calling for us to get into the 90s either Thursday or Friday and see the mercury reach the 90s into the middle of next week. This will meet the defined criteria for a heat wave, so prepare for several days of 90+ heat. 

The hottest days will be Saturday and Sunday as highs reach the middle 90s. Check on your neighbors during this long string of hot weather.  Also, be aware of any outdoor pets or livestock as they too will be impacted by the heat.  Plan outdoor activities early in the day or in the evening when temperatures are more tolerable.

There may be a few isolated showers or storms that develop in the heat of the day, but nothing organized. Sunday may be the first day with a pop-up shower or storm, so that is also something to keep in mind over the next several days.
