LOCAL ALERT WEATHER DAY: Extended period of high heat across the high desert

Bend, OR (KTVZ) -

10AM UPDATE: AIR QUALITY CONCERNS ACROSS CENTRAL OREGON

Air quality is slightly unhealthy to unhealthy this morning. Be aware of smoke through Deschutes County today. Poor air quality is expected to continue in some areas.

A ridge of high pressure has found a comfy spot on the west coast and will stay here for a little while. Highs today will get into the low to mid 90s. Areas will see 90 degree temperatures continue through the first half of next week. You should see the hottest temperatures this weekend, with Saturday even getting into the upper 90s for some areas in Jefferson County.

A Local Alert Weather Day has been issued for the high heat on Saturday. Make sure you're staying cool, hydrated, and keeping you and your loved ones safe. There will be little overnight relief this weekend.

Remember to practice fire safety through this heat wave. Temperatures are hot, conditions are very dry, and winds will get breezy at times. A Red Flag Warning is active for the Warm Springs Reservation this afternoon.

There is a chance for isolated storms starting Sunday and continuing through the first half of next week. Chances are slim, but that will also bring fire threat to the region. We'll see gustier winds on those days and if any storm develops, we’ll have to worry about lightning-caused fires.

Right now, we are still determining timing and how great the threat is. There will be changes as we nail it down, but we will continue to track that storm potential on KTVZ News.

Happy Friday! Have a great weekend. Stay safe and cool!
