Air Quality Alert today, hot pattern through the holiday weekend

The smoke form the Emigrant Fire continues to drift into western and southern Deschutes County. This fire is south of the Willamette Pass and on the border between Lane and Douglas counties. It is burning in the former wildfire burn scar from the Tumblebug fire in 2009. The fuel of new timber and old, deadwood is generation significant smoke.  Winds from the south and possibly the west later today will continue to provide us with unsafe air.  La Pine and southern Deschutes County are most impacted. Unhealthy air is in place; check our air quality charts at the bottom of the weather page.

The weather over the holiday weekend will be hot and dry as the mercury in the thermometer will top out in the low 90s. Heat arriving from the southwest around an area of low pressure off the coast and an area of high pressure to the SE will pump in the heat.

The hot weather will be persistent though the first week of September.  Highs are normally in the low 80s and upper 70s this time of year, therefore the middle 90s by next Wednesday will be significantly hotter than normal. Stay hydrated.

Labor Day will be hot and dry, hopefully not as smoky, except from your cookout. Please be very careful with any fires that you start and make sure to keep them well monitored. Douse them with water and make sure they are cool to the touch before leaving.  Fire danger is high this weekend, stay smart.
